Vern's HZ GTS 4 Door

This car was purchased 3 years ago as seen in the photo. Whilst generally the car was sound, registered and in driveable condition, there were quite a few problems “below the skin” and of course discovered upon closer inspection and upon pulling the car apart.

For example the wiring throughout was tampered with having been cut, spliced, re joined, added to with various things not operating properly. The entire wiring has been subsequently replaced to ensure everything works as it should. Thanks to Street Rodder Neil Davis for doing the job which took the better part of 14 hours to complete.

The interior as you would expect for a car of this age was well worn and altered from original with grey carpet and light grey velour headlining but brown seats and butchered dash fascia . Strangely there were more holes in fascia panel than a piece of Swiss cheese. Perhaps a quasi restoration which was not completed properly!  Subsequently, the interior has totally new door linings in original style to that of an HZ GTS, black loop pile carpet, new centre console, new instrument fascia and brand new gauges as well as original style head lining. The seats still need to be re-trimmed in original style and colour materials.

The existing engine had been re worked with lumpy cam, solid lifters, dodgy Quadrajet carby, extractors and numerous other things which made the car difficult to drive and of course very thirsty. The car had air conditioning in the past, was removed for whatever reason but will be re-installed along with power windows.

The existing engine will go and be replaced with a totally rebuilt, balanced 308 running a milder Crower cam, hydraulic lifters, B Cast heads, Holley carb, electronic distributor, lightened flywheel, Pacemaker extractors and many new internal components which will make the car more driveable and more reliable.

The car is running a 3.55 differential coupled to an M21 manual gearbox but this combination makes the engine rev too high at speed so diff is to be replaced with a lower 3.08 using a rebuilt M21 gearbox.

The wheels as seen in the photo have gone to be replaced with original GTS style wheels in original colour scheme with widened 7” outer rims.

Apart from these major changes, I have been able to acquire many “new old stock” genuine GM parts such as GTS steering wheel, gauges, door handles, tail light assemblies, GTS guards, nose cone panel, door skins, door shells, halogen headlight conversion and numerous other components.  Countless hours (and $) have been spent shopping on E Bay for these parts but certainly worthwhile and during the process have discovered there are many people who like to hoard Holden parts!!!

Yet to be completed are repairs to some minor rusted areas (in the usual places) and total re spray but as the paint work is OK at present, the paint can wait for a while.
