Ever
since I could reach the steering wheel of my dad’s truck, I’ve been
fascinated with anything on wheels. At the age of 16 I bought my first
Monaro. It was a HQ GTS Coupe, 308 and 4spd.
At the time I didn’t know much about the ins and outs of a
Monaro, but loved the look of them. We had a
lot of fun in that car until one day is was stolen and I never saw it
again. A couple of years later my cousin bought a HQ GTS Coupe 350. We
went everywhere with it including Calder Drag meetings on Saturday
nights. Not long after my brother came across another HQ GTS coupe,
which was again 308 with 4spd. It seems at the time that HQ
GTSs where falling from the sky, there were
so many to choose from. These days you’re lucky to see one on the road.
At this
point I should say that I like all Australian Muscle cars. The next car
I owned was an XY Interceptor which was basically an unmarked GT. After
a complete rebuild I came across an XW GT which I owned for 6 years. All
this time I was on the lookout for a HK-HG monaro
GTS. After I sold my GT (couldn’t refuse the offer), I thought to myself
that I’d had enough of cars, until I saw a HT GTS advertised for a good
price. At the time I was in Adelaide for a working trip and called the
seller from the airport. After some lengthy conversation I bought the
car over the phone. I thought to myself that these days its dam
difficult to find a GTS Monaro so I took the
chance. The car was only advertised for a few hours on the net before I
saw it.
The car
now sits in my garage. I received the car and went through it to see the
extent of the unseen rust. NONE! There is not one bit of rust on the car
and to top it off it’s never been in an accident. I am the 3rd
owner and the previous owner had the car in storage for 12 years. The
car has had some modifications over the years, as have many. I intend to
put the car back to as close to original as possible. Well I’ve started.
I started cleaning up the interior and one thing led to another and now
the whole interior is out. I will be updating the interior build with
photos on the Monaro web site. The car is
originally an 80837 model with 307 and powerglide.
The exterior colour is originally Platinum
metallic with black interior. The car will be put back to original
specs, but I want to enjoy the car as it is for now. |
